John Harris


John Harris owns and manages Harris Ranch, a diversified agricultural company in California that produces and markets beef, almonds, pistachios, citrus and several vegetable crops.  It also includes Harris Ranch Inn & Restaurant, a major hospitality center on Interstate 5, which includes the fifth busiest independent restaurant in California.  The Harris Ranch Beef Company was an early leader in branded beef and is available at several upscale restaurant and grocery outlets both in California and nationally. It is recognized as an industry leader in best practices and by volume as one of the largest beef companies in the West.

Harris also has been active in breeding and racing thoroughbred horses for almost 50 years, producing several California bred champions. His Fresno County farm raised California Chrome, the winner of the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, as well as numerous other major races. John has also been inducted into the California Thoroughbred Hall of Fame.

John is active on boards of several organizations including the Pacific Legal Foundation, where he is the former board chair. He received their Foundation of Freedom Award in 2013. He is also on the board of the California Cattlemen’s Association, Western Growers Association, Race Track Chaplaincy of America, and the Maddy Institute.  He is a past chairman of the California Horse Racing Board and is also a member and Steward of The Jockey Club. 

He is also a former board chair of the Saint Agnes Medical Center, a major health care provider in the Fresno area. He has also supported several other Valley hospitals including Children’s Hospital of Central California and Fresno Community Hospital. He has also been an active donor to his alma mater, the University of California at Davis, as well as supporting numerous efforts at Cal Poly –SLO and Fresno State University. John has recognized the importance of aiding today’s youth, and tomorrow’s future, with contributions to the Boys & Girls Club, and the Boy Scouts over many years. He has also been very active in the evolution of the Jack A. Harris Memorial Scholarship, a fund honoring his father’s memory and dedicated to helping those in pursuit of a higher education, concentrating on worthy students in the Central Valley. John was also named 2014 Agriculturalist of the year by the Fresno area Chamber of Commerce.

John has been active in several federal and state political campaigns and issues, particularly those impacting agriculture and water.  John and his wife, Carole, live on their River Ranch east of Fresno.  They both are graduates of University of California at Davis.
